Load and fall into volley

Load and fall into volley

Suzie has been working hard on improving her volley technique. One of the areas she's working on is adding power to her volleys through the body weight transfer. Lots of players know to step with the opposite foot into volleys, but not everyone gains the body weight transfer through this process. The important part is to load on the outside leg, then allow body weight moment to fall or lunge forward through the volley. As long as you don't take a back swing, the timing should allow for a lot of forward momentum, which in turn becomes the source of power. Suzie has done a good job improving on this.

19 VTA Players Competed at Level 3 Sectionals in Yakima! A massive congratulations to the 19 players from the Valley Tennis Academy who competed in the Level 3 Sectionals tournament in Yakima this past weekend. VTA Dominates at OSAA State 5A Tournament

What an incredible weekend for the Valley Tennis Academy family at the OSAA State Tournament. We are beyond proud of every single player who stepped onto the courts and gave it their all. It was amazing to be at the tournament and see so many Corvallis players and families. Corvallis, and the VTA program felt like a family up there who all supported each other in pursuit of winning. The success that players experienced was a direct result of the hard work and commitment they have put forth all year. It was not by accident that so many of the VTA players produced wins. Each player has committed to training and sacrificed a lot to make progress and development in their own games happen. Congratulations to our champions Grae and Misha for taking the boys doubles title, and to Emily for her amazing run to the singles crown. We also celebrate Keira and Juliet on their doubles championship, and Natalie, Alison, and Suzie for an outstanding performance in the all-VTA final. CV girls completely dominated the tournament, as it was all-CV finals sweep for singles and doubles! Of which, I've never heard of before. Truly amazing. Beyond the titles, we are so impressed by the heart shown by players like Andrew, who battled to a third-place finish, and Aidan, Jason, Ben, Joe, Silas, and Hugh, who all showed up big time for their teams. It was a proud weekend for Corvallis tennis and the VTA family. Great job everyone! CV Girls - 1st Place CV Boys - 2nd Place CHS Boys - 3rd Place

The importance of friends in tennis

The importance of friends in tennis

The dynamic of individual sports often feels like a lonely grind, but the reality is that no one makes it to the podium or the collegiate level entirely on their own. Having Sarah back at the Academy really highlights how critical the "team" element is, even when you’re the only one on your side of the net. Looking back at that core group of girls Sarah trained with, they weren't just hitting partners; they were a support system. Here is why that environment is the secret sauce for long-term success: ## The Competitive Edge of Friendship In a sport like tennis, the pressure can be isolating. When you have a group of four or five close friends training together, the "work" stops feeling like a chore. You’re not just showing up to hit baskets of balls; you’re showing up for each other. That camaraderie creates a safe space to fail, which is exactly where the most growth happens. ## Iron Sharpens Iron Traveling across the Pacific Northwest for tournaments is a gauntlet. It’s a lot of long drives, hotel stays, and tough losses. Having a "squad" in the bleachers or at the next court over changes the narrative. It turns a stressful weekend into a shared experience. When your best friends are also your toughest competitors, you push each other to a level you simply can’t reach solo. You learn how to compete like crazy on the court and then grab a meal together five minutes later. ## Mental Longevity Burnout is the biggest enemy of junior development. The players who stay in the game the longest are almost always the ones who have deep social ties to the sport. The social bond acts as a buffer against the frustrations of a plateau or a bad tournament run. ### The Bottom Line We’re not just building athletes; we’re building a community. Seeing the next generation at the Academy start to form these same bonds is a reminder that while the ranking might belong to an individual, the journey belongs to the group. Success is just better when you have your friends right there with you.

Cami Schermerhorn

Cami Schermerhorn

Assistant Coach

Specialty: Biomechanics & Injury-Preventive Technique

"My teaching style is all about basics and solid mechanics to maximize both power and consistency, while avoiding injuries from putting undue strain on joints and muscles."

Cami grew up in Bakersfield, California. She started playing tennis at age six, competing in local tournaments at age 9, playing nationally at 12, and then professionally starting just before her 16th birthday. She traveled globally on the WTA Women's Tour from 1982 until 1996. She won 2 titles on the tour, and has career wins over Steffi Graf, Zina Garrison, Helena Sukova, and Chris Evert. She reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 1984, and won several matches at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open in singles as well as doubles during her career. After she ended her professional tennis career, Cami attended college at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she double-majored in Psychology and Communications and minored in German; she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Cami then received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2001 to do graduate research in Germany, a country she became very fond of through her professional tennis days. She stayed on beyond the Fulbright year and took advantage of an opportunity to earn a Master's degree in Psychology in Germany; she lived in Wuerzburg, Germany for five years in this venture. Although she had planned to become a sports psychologist, her life course was changed after a very serious car accident. Cami then moved to Eugene, Oregon in 2006 to marry her now-husband. She worked as a therapist at a mental health agency in Eugene for 14 years. She and her husband relocated to Corvallis in 2021; she opened her own neurofeedback practice in downtown Corvallis in 2024. Cami has taught tennis lessons since ending her pro career in 1996 in conjunction with studying and working, and she has taught pickleball lessons since 2018. Her teaching style is all about basics and solid mechanics to maximize both power and consistency as well as to avoid injuries from putting undue strain on joints and muscles.
